ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

ESOL and English have long been one of the staple products of the English project along with ICT and Maths. Good communication and understanding written instructions are key in the workplace as we are dealing with:

  • Policies and Procedures - to protect ourselves and others in the workplace

  • Strict Hygiene and Health & Safety Laws to protect the company’s reputation, employees and the general public who buy our products

  • Shop floor machinery which has the potential to cause harm to ourselves and others in the workplace environment

The BFAWU Learning Services have liaised with FTOs (Full Time Officials), site representatives and ULRs (Union Learning Reps) to enable learning. The branch officials will negotiate time release for learners wherever possible. Courses will normally be run through a local college, or through one of the many providers we work with, where funding is available.

Funding for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is not available in England, except for the unemployed or earning below £16, 000 per year, but there is help on-line through the British Council:

Learn English On-line                      This is for Adults and Kids, full of tips and support. There is even Learn English with Football incorporating match rules with playing games and quizzes making it fun and engaging while learning.
